Condition Explainer

What Is an Anxiety Disorder, and Is That What You Have?

Everyone feels anxious sometimes. But when worry is constant, difficult to control, and starting to interfere with your sleep, your work, or your relationships, that is no longer normal stress. That is an anxiety disorder, and it is one of the most common and treatable mental health conditions in the world.

Anxiety disorders are not a personality flaw, a sign of weakness, or something you can simply think your way out of. They involve real changes in brain chemistry and nervous system function, which is exactly why proper psychiatric evaluation and, when appropriate, medication management can make such a significant difference.

At Lifewise, we take anxiety seriously. Our first step is always a comprehensive evaluation, understanding your full history, your specific symptoms, and what your anxiety is actually costing you in daily life, before building a personalised treatment plan.

Signs & Symptoms

Recognising the Signs of an Anxiety Disorder

Anxiety shows up differently for different people. You don’t need to have all of these symptoms to have an anxiety disorder, but if several of these feel familiar, it may be time to speak with a psychiatric provider.

Excessive, uncontrollable worry

Persistent worry about everyday things, work, health, family, money, that feels impossible to switch off, even when you know rationally that things are fine.

Sleep disruption

Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep because your mind is racing. Waking in the night with a flood of anxious thoughts you can't quiet.

Physical symptoms

Racing heartbeat, chest tightness, shortness of breath, sweating, trembling, or nausea, especially in anticipation of certain situations or with no obvious trigger.

Restlessness & on-edge feeling

Feeling keyed up or unable to relax. A persistent sense that something bad is about to happen, even when nothing specific is wrong.

Avoidance behaviour

Avoiding situations, people, or responsibilities because the anxiety they produce feels unmanageable. This avoidance often makes the anxiety worse over time.

Concentration & memory issues

Difficulty focusing or completing tasks because your mind keeps pulling toward worry. Feeling mentally exhausted from the constant effort of managing anxiety.

Types We Treat

Anxiety Disorders We Evaluate & Treat at Lifewise

Anxiety is not a single condition. The term covers a spectrum of related disorders, each with distinct symptoms and treatment considerations. Lifewise evaluates and treats all of the following.

Most Common

Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

Persistent, excessive worry about a wide range of everyday topics — health, money, work, relationships — that is difficult to control and present on most days. GAD is often accompanied by physical symptoms like muscle tension, fatigue, and sleep problems.

Common

Panic Disorder

Recurrent, unexpected panic attacks — sudden surges of intense fear with physical symptoms like racing heart, chest pain, and shortness of breath — along with persistent worry about having more attacks. Panic disorder can significantly restrict daily life if left untreated.

Common

Social Anxiety Disorder

Intense fear of social or performance situations driven by worry about being judged, embarrassed, or humiliated. Social anxiety goes well beyond shyness — it can prevent people from working, maintaining relationships, or participating in everyday activities.

Often Co-occurring

Anxiety with Co-occurring Depression

Anxiety and depression frequently occur together, with anxiety often preceding depression over time. When both are present, treatment must address both conditions. Our evaluation process always screens for co-occurring conditions to ensure your plan covers the full picture.

Specialist Care

Anxiety Related to Trauma or PTSD

Anxiety symptoms rooted in past trauma require a trauma-informed approach. If your anxiety is connected to a traumatic experience, your evaluation and treatment plan will reflect that — including appropriate referrals to trauma-specialist therapists where needed.

Our Approach

Our Approach to Anxiety Treatment at Lifewise

Every patient’s anxiety is different. Our approach starts with listening — then builds a treatment plan grounded in clinical evidence and shaped by your specific situation.

01

Comprehensive Psychiatric Evaluation

Your first appointment is a detailed, one-on-one assessment — not a rushed intake. We explore your full history: when your anxiety started, what triggers it, how it affects your daily functioning, what you’ve tried before, and what you’re hoping to achieve. This is the foundation of everything that follows.

02

Accurate Diagnosis

Using DSM-5 diagnostic criteria, we determine which anxiety disorder (or combination of disorders) you are experiencing. Accurate diagnosis matters — different anxiety disorders have different treatment protocols, and treating a misdiagnosed condition rarely produces the results patients need.

03

Personalised Medication Management

Where medication is clinically appropriate, we prescribe evidence-based treatments — commonly SSRIs, SNRIs, or other non-habit-forming medications proven effective for anxiety. We explain every option clearly: what it is, how it works, what to expect, and what the alternatives are. No surprises.

04

Therapy Referrals When Beneficial

Medication and therapy together produce the best outcomes for most anxiety disorders. While Lifewise specialises in psychiatric medication management, we actively coordinate referrals to licensed therapists — including those practising CBT and ACT, the two most evidence-supported talk therapies for anxiety.

05

Ongoing Monitoring & Adjustment

Anxiety treatment is not a single appointment. After starting treatment, we schedule regular follow-ups to assess your progress, manage any medication side effects, and adjust your plan as needed. The goal is sustained improvement — not just short-term relief.

A Note on Medication

What You Should Know About Anxiety Medication

If you are anxious about taking medication, you are not alone. Here is what we want you to know before your first appointment.

Medication is not always required — but it can be life-changing when it is

Not everyone with anxiety needs medication. Many people with mild anxiety benefit most from therapy alone. However, for moderate to severe anxiety disorders — especially when symptoms are significantly interfering with daily functioning — psychiatric medication is often the most effective path to meaningful, lasting relief. At Lifewise, we never prescribe anything without a thorough evaluation and a clear clinical rationale.

First-line medications for anxiety are non-habit-forming

The most commonly prescribed medications for anxiety disorders are SSRIs (like sertraline or escitalopram) and SNRIs — antidepressant medications with a strong evidence base for treating anxiety. These are not habit-forming or sedating. They work by gradually stabilising brain chemistry over several weeks. We walk you through what to expect at every stage.

You are always involved in your treatment decisions

We believe informed patients make better treatment partners. Every medication recommendation at Lifewise comes with a full explanation: what the medication is, how it works, what the expected timeline is, what side effects to watch for, and what happens if it doesn't work as hoped. Nothing is prescribed without your understanding and consent.

FAQ

Anxiety Treatment FAQ

Normal stress is typically tied to a specific situation and eases when that situation resolves. Anxiety disorders involve persistent, excessive worry that is difficult to control, often occurs without a clear cause, and interferes with daily functioning over an extended period — typically six months or more. A psychiatric evaluation is the clearest way to get an accurate answer.

Yes. As a licensed psychiatric nurse practitioner in Texas, New York, Arizona, and Vermont, our provider can evaluate, diagnose, and prescribe medications for anxiety disorders via telehealth. Following your evaluation, any prescribed medications are sent electronically to your preferred local pharmacy in these states.

Both psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners (PMHNPs) are licensed to evaluate, diagnose, and prescribe medications for mental health conditions including anxiety. PMHNPs complete graduate-level training specifically in psychiatric mental health, and research consistently shows equivalent patient outcomes. The key difference at Lifewise is the personalised, continuity-focused model — you work with the same provider throughout your care.

This depends on the severity of your anxiety and the treatment approach. If medication is prescribed, SSRIs and SNRIs typically begin showing meaningful effects within four to six weeks, with continued improvement over three to six months. Some patients notice improvement sooner. We monitor your progress closely and adjust your plan if the initial approach isn’t producing the expected results.

Research consistently shows that the combination of psychiatric medication management and therapy — particularly cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) — produces better long-term outcomes for most anxiety disorders than either approach alone. Lifewise specialises in the psychiatric side of care and actively coordinates referrals to licensed therapists when therapy would be beneficial. Many of our patients work with both a Lifewise provider and a separate therapist simultaneously.

Yes — and for many anxiety patients, it is preferable to in-person care. Multiple clinical studies have confirmed that telehealth psychiatric treatment produces outcomes equivalent to in-person care for anxiety disorders. Many patients also find it easier to engage openly and honestly from the comfort of their own home, which can improve treatment outcomes.

Your first appointment is a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation — typically 45 to 60 minutes. Your provider will ask about your symptoms, how long they have been present, how they affect your daily life, your personal and family mental health history, any medications or treatments you have tried, and your goals for treatment. You are encouraged to ask questions throughout. There is no pressure to commit to any treatment during the first session.

No referral is needed. You can request an initial consultation directly through our website. Simply complete the short consultation request form and we will follow up within one business day with available appointment slots.
